Manchester Airport Scoops Regional Travel Award

Manchester Airport has been named as the UK's best regional airport in the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards 2008.

Officials from the airport picked up the prestigious award at a ceremony in London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

The hub's handling of heightened security restrictions and commitment to customer service were both praised by the judges.

Manchester Airport's managing director, Andrew Cornish, said: "We are very pleased and proud to have been presented with this award especially as it is voted for by some of the most experienced industry professionals in the travel agents.

"We pride ourselves on giving the passengers the very best possible experience and it is great to see that the industry recognises that hard work and commitment."

Recently, officials at the airport revealed that they were set to further improve security by introducing iris recognition systems that will control access to all restricted areas of the hub.

Security and training manager Asha Williams explained: "We're always looking for new ways to simplify and further improve the robust security screening process of both passengers and staff and by harnessing this clever technology we can achieve both those goals."
