Newcastle Airport Offers Final Flights In Dakotas

Newcastle Airport offers final flights in DakotasNewcastle Airport recently offered vintage aircraft enthusiasts the chance to board an iconic Dakota aeroplane in a farewell commemorative flight.

Incoming European safety legislation has proved either cost prohibitive or, in the case of the DC-3, impossible and so the planes will be carrying out a Dakotas Farewell Tour of the UK up until July 16th when the rules are likely to be applied.

Classicflight.com said: "The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been immensely supportive and helpful, and we're grateful for the help they've given us.

"But time is passing, and it looks ever more certain that July 16th - the implementation date for the EU-OPS legislation - will see our Daks no longer allowed to carry passengers."

Over 1,900 Dakotas were made available to The Royal Air Force at the start of World War II and were used extensively in transporting paratroopers and towing gliders.

After the war, four squadrons of Dakota IVs were instrumental in the Berlin Airlift of 1948 - 49.
