1934 - Aberdeen airport was opened in 1934 after land in Dyce, near Aberdeen, was purchased in 1931 for the development of a public aerodrome. The initial purpose of the airport was to link the Northern islands of Scotland with London.
1939 - In the Second World War the airport became a military base, and in 1939 the RAF took command of the airport whilst some civil flights to the Northern isles continued.
1947 - Following the end of fighting after World War 2, Aberdeen Airport was Nationalised
1967 - In 1967 the airport became used as a heliport due to the discovery of North Sea oil. This linked the increasing number of oil rigs to the mainland. Subsequently the airport became the world's largest heliport with over 37,000 helicopter flights annually.
1975 - Aberdeen Airport was privatized by BAA in 1987.
2005 - The airport has been the centre of current media interest due to proposed expansion and the resulting environmental impacts. The airport is currently undergoing expansion main runway to be extended to allow larger aircraft and trans-Atlantic flights to use the airport and bringing more passengers. The airport also only recently, (2005) allowed flights to land and take-off 24 hours a day.
